What does a translator of plays do? How do you translate text that has to be spoken? Does the theatre translator need to have specific skills?

 

This short workshop will give an overview of the principles and problems a theatre translator has to contend, and they might should consider as they “carry the text across" from one language to another, from one scene to the next.

 

Alongside some practical writing and translation exercises, Uncovering Translation will draw on examples from translation of some of the plays in Italy Uncovered in order to look at: the relationship with language on the British stage; working with playwrights, actors and directors; the place of translated plays in the crowded landscape of "British theatre”. 

 

While the examples used will be from Italian plays and a knowledge of the language is useful, the workshop is aimed at anyone interested in exploring theatre translation, irrespective of their language combination.
